Georgia O’Keeffe exhibition at the Pompidou Centre until 6th December 2021

It’s the first big exhibition of the season and the first ever French retrospective of Georgia O’Keeffe’s work at the Pompidou Centre, featuring over a hundred paintings, photos and drawings covering her whole career, up to her death in 1986.

Known for her use of colour and her lush, carnal paintings of flowers, Georgie O’Keeffe is one of the most recognisable painters of the 20th century. After starting her artistic career in the 1920s, she helped define American modernism before evolving in to a more abstract style in the 1960s.

You may know many of her most famous images, but the exhibition provides a lot more context, showing her paintings of New York skyscrapers, shells and animal bones, revealing the breadth of her work.

Presented chronologically, the exhibition starts off focusing on the 291 gallery run by photographer Alfred Stieglitz, where O’Keeffe was able to discover artists that would influence her work, including Rodin, Cézanne and Matisse.

After presenting her early works, you’ll see a change in her style as it evolves towards abstraction, influenced by Kandinsky, and an explanation of the importance of her visit to New-Mexico in 1929. This trip went on to inspire her to buy Ghost Ranch there, an isolated building surrounded by desert.

The exhibition ends with examples of O’Keeffe’s work from the 1950s and 60s, a simpler more abstract style that she used to try and express a mystical feeling inspired by spirituality.

This collection of over 100 works of art was made possible by loans from prestigious museums including the Georgia O’Keeffe Museum, the MoMA, Met, Whitney Museum of American Art, Art Institute de Chicago and Thyssen-Bornemisza Museum in Madrid.

To explore the subject further, French-speakers can listen to a short series of podcasts (around 17 minutes in total) exploring various moments in the life of the painter.

And if you’d like to continue pondering O’Keeffe’s work, a beautiful catalogue of the exhibition is available (272 pages, 42€ here at amazon.fr).
