Vivian Maier exhibition at the Luxembourg Museum, 15th September 2021 – 16th January 2022

The mysterious street photographer Vivian Maier, whose work was only discovered after her death (in 2009) and completely by accident, is the subject of a new exhibition at the Luxembourg Museum, super close to our hotels!

If you don’t know the story behind Vivian Maier, it’s quite a wild ride. She was born in New York in 1926 but left to France with her mother in 1932 when her parents divorced. Five years later, the two returned to New York, and Vivian went on to live in Chicago in 1956, working as a nanny for monied families.

She dies destitute in 2009, but that’s just the beginning of the story…

In 2007, a certain John Maloof went to an auction and bought a lot of photos, films and negatives (up to 150,000) all by the same anonymous artist, and in 2009 – coincidentally not long after Vivian Maier’s death – found her name on an envelope in one of the boxes.

Without telling anyone, the nanny had taken tens of thousands of incredible photos, and Maloof quickly understood that her work had to be shown to the public.

That was the beginning of a long adventure including a documentary, books, a court case and exhibitions around the world, like this new large-scale exhibition at the Luxembourg Museum.

With her work now compared to that of people like Henri Cartier Bresson, Diane Arbus and Robert Doisneau, Maier’s talent has finally been revealed (something she kept secret while she was still alive), and this new exhibition brings together a vast selection of her photos (self-portraits, street scene, colour shots…) as well as – for the first time – super 8 and 16mm films she shot.

It’s the biggest exhibition of Vivian Maier’s work ever organised.

In the exhibition, an installation – Superzoom Numérique – allows visitors to discover a selection of photos on a big screen, piloted by a touchscreen.

And in a ‘streetstyle’ section of the exhibition, there’s a slightly humorous look at 21 photos selected by fashion historian Catherine Örmen, showing the styles of the 1950s and 60s in Maier’s photos.

In addition, to further explore the subject of the exhibition there is:

— a number of free conferences at the nearby Les 3 Luxembourg cinema,

— a showing of the documentary Finding Vivian Maier on 30th September,

— talks (Une femme en contre-jour, Chicago et son architecture, Vivian Maier, d’un moment à l’autre…)

— free entrance and special events for the White Night event on 2nd October, from 7.30pm to 1am

— a sketching evening on 5th October from 7-9pm

— guided visits, workshops…
