The Brasserie les Deux Palais restaurant, Paris

We’ve probably been past the Deux Palais Brasserie hundreds of times without noticing its high ceilings, cosy corners and retro interior design. There are not many of these places left – what a find! But with a menu that also seems a little stuck in time, what was the food going to be like?…

In a big city like Paris there are things that never seem to change (the architecture, monuments, museums…) and others that are forever changing – stores, bars… and often restaurants. Either the place has to be super trendy and new, or it is left in its old state to gain a certain vintage charm (like Brasserie Chartier, the Train Bleu, Brasserie Lipp…)

La Brasserie les Deux Palais belongs to this latter group, with interior design that mixes Belle Époque and the 1970s. In the basement next to the toilets, for example, are four wooden telephone booths (although the phones are long gone now) and the colour of the restaurant itself is the ‘nicotine yellow’ that a lot of places had before smoking was banned inside.

Plaster details, gold leaf, big mirrors, red seats, mosaic tiles on the floor… It’s really well-preserved, with a very high ceiling that amplifies the feeling of space. Wow!

Surprisingly for a restaurant in the centre, the prices on the menu aren’t excessive, and while the choice is rather classic, it’s also very large. There’s lots of meat of course, but also snacks like white bread sandwiches, a French-style hotdog, sausage or cheese platters and a long list of desserts and crêpes. There’s even a kids menu and vegetarian option – something for everyone!

We started our meal with six snails, which weren’t all as warm as we would have liked, but still very good, bathed in their butter and garlic sauce. Our other starter was a ball of burrata, quite firm, which came with a generous amount of well-seasoned crunchy salade.

For one main dish, we chose a fillet of salmon with a chive and butter sauce and pureed carrots. The salmon was firm, tasty and very obviously fresh and good-quality (Label Rouge, it said on the menu).

For the other, we chose ravioles du Dauphiné, mini ravioli once again with a chive and butter sauce, but also parmesan cheese. It was a huge portion, rich but not overly so.

And as a treat, we ordered a side serving of chips (French fries?). We couldn’t resist 😜

After these big portions, it took a few minutes for us to be able to think about dessert! We choose mango and lemon sorbet (very fruity) and crêpes with Grand Marnier (light, and flambéed in front of us).

With large tasty servings reasonably priced, served in a a retro venue by old school Parisian waiters (i.e. almost all over 50) this is a rare Parisian experience!

We’ll have to come back in summer when their terrace is open, with a great view of the Palais de Justice

The Brasseries les Deux Palais (here) is open 7 days a week from 7am-10pm (opens 10am weekends)
