Interstellar – cinema and special effects exhibition at the Arts Centre in Enghien-les-Bains until 8th April 2022

Paris has lots of great exhibitions on offer, but you might be surprised to learn that there are also some great options just outside the city limits and super easy to get to.

for example, this new (free!) exhibition in nearby Parisian suburb Enghien-les-Bains – best-known to Parisians for its lake and casino – has been created in collaboration with the Cinema Museum of Lyon, and is only 12 minutes away from Gare du Nord…

We have to admit, Parisians are not always very enthusiastic about leaving the city limits (some even have reservations about crossing the Seine). And frankly, Paris has pretty much everything you need without searching elsewhere.

And yet, it’s a bit of a shame, because the area around the city has so much to offer, and sometimes getting there can be quicker than a metro ride between Concorde and Bastille.

Enghien-les-Bains is one of the places worth making an effort to see (if you can call a 12-minute train ride ‘an effort’). First of all, it’s where you’ll find the nearest casino to Paris (which doesn’t have one) with its 500 slot machines. 😳

The casino is on the edge of the town’s lake, and we’re not talking about a puddle – it extends over 43 hectares and has a circumference of 3km surrounded by gardens, with pedal boats, kayaks, fishing…

It’s also a lot closer than we had imagined, just three stations (12 minutes) from Gare du Nord (you can plan your itinerary in two clicks here).

So, let’s leave the city behind, discover the town of Enghien-les-Bains and see an exhibition! The Arts Centre is currently showing Interstellar – cinema and special effects, a trip through the history of film, space and special effects, and it’s free!

You’ll see costumes, models, accessories and puppets from famous films including 2001 A Space Odyssey, Aliens, Star Wars, Mars Attacks!, Close Encounters of the Third Kind, Men in Black, Jurassic Park, Starship Troopers, Stargate, Independence Day

The exhibition first looks at the pioneers of special effects like Carlo Rambaldi, pays homage to Rob Legato who has worked on Apollo 13, Titanic and Harry Potter, and has a large room of costumes and film accessories.

Following that, you’ll learn about how digital effects revolutionised filmmaking, and a final section showcases creature creation, with examples from Aliens and even an Ewok from Star Wars!

Several events are being organised around the exhibition, like a special Mars Attacks! nbight on 27th January starting 7pm (with a guided visit of the exhibition followed by a showing of the film), a masterclass with Rob Legato talking to Alexandre Poncet on 28th January, a special effects day 29th January, a tongue-in-cheek ‘soirée Nanarland‘ dedicated to the worst special effects ever seen on film (also 29th January)…

You’ll find all the details here.
