This new exhibition at the Quai Branly Museum, not far from our hotels, may seem weirdly specific, but upon closer inspection could actually be fascinating – it’s all about ancient clubs from the Pacific region, and how they were often exceptional works of art!

These traditional weapons of course had a practical use in combat, but their importance goes way beyond battling – these thoughtfully created pieces also have a cultural importance and complexity that you might not immediately see.

Often adorned with precious jewels or metals, and very carefully sculpted, these clubs have a spiritual importance, which explains why they were also used in ceremonies. You’ll also learn the historical value of these pieces, which often served as souvenirs or trophies.

It’s the first time a large-scale exhibition has concentrated on the subject, with over 140 exhibits from the Pacific, Australia and Easter Island.

After a first presentation in Venice earlier this year, the exhibition is in Paris until the end of September (entrance is included with the ticket to the museum), and the curator’s book on the subject can be found on Amazon here (49€).

BONUS! The Quai Branly Museum has opened a second new exhibition at the same time – Microbial Worlds (until 11th September 2022) looks at how we live with small beings. The museum has notably commissioned contemporary artists to create works specially for the event.
