Bastille Day 2022 – the military parade, meet ‘n’ greets with army members, a huge concert and firework display at the Eiffel Tower, and more firemen’s balls!

Back with a full programme of events, the national holiday naturally has a lot on offer in Paris. Here’s everything going on in the city on this very special day!

If you still have a bit of energy left after the firemen’s balls the night before, the 14th July has enough going on to keep you busy for the entire day! And all night!

The celebrations start with the traditional military parade on the Champs Élysées starting 10am (but you’ll have to arrive a lot earlier if you want to see anything. It continues until midday, this year’s theme is ‘Share the flame‘ and the French President will of course be present to salute his troups.

Soldiers from nine other countries will also be marching (Estonia, Latvia, Poland, the Czech Republic, Slovakia, Hungary, Romania and Bulgaria) and the list of partherepating units can be found ici.

An image showing the precise line-up is here, and for a comprehensive look at the parade (the fiull programme complet, units, history, etc.), there’s a French Army page here.

After the parade (and even during) there’s an event called Les Français à la rencontre de leurs armées (“The French meeting their armies) at Invalides from 10am-6pm, taking place in Cour d’Honneur, the northern gardens and on the esplanade, with planes and helicopters to marvel at, a presentation of the latest technological innovations, activities…

Other sections of the army can be chatted with elsewhere in town from 12.30-6pm: the Air Force will be in Parc André Citroën, the Land Army will be at place de la Nation, the Navy will be on the square in front of Hôtel de Ville and Parisian firemen will be at the town hall of the 19th arrondissement.

The full programme can be consulted here.

If you want a quick snooze, now would be the time – you have a big evening lined up!

Starting 9pm at the Eiffel Tower, the Orchestre National de France will be giving a huge free symphonic concert (ending as ever with La Marseillaise). You can also catch it on TV and national radio station France Inter (or online the day after, here).

After that, there’s the part of the evening that everyone has been waiting for – the firework display launched from the Eiffel Tower (which will be closed all day on the 14th July, and until 2pm the next day). This year’s show has been devised by fireworks specialists Ruggieri, a venerable French company founded in 1739!

The fireworks start at 11pm (we told you you’d need a snooze!), but you’ll have to arrive a lot earlier if you want a decent seat.

The whole evening is free and without reservation, but note that several nearby metro stations will be closed starting 3pm (Champs de Mars/Tour Eiffel, Passy, Pont de l’Alma) and 7pm (Trocadéro, Bir-Hakeim, Alma-Marceau, Ecole Militaire).

More info about the concert and fireworks can be found here.

D.R.

It’s gone midnight, but the evening is far from over! If you want to dance with a fireman, soldier or sailor (usually present in large numbers because they don’t have to get up early for a parade 😜), there are two balls open until 4am!

Get your dancing shoes on and head for Port-Royal (here) or Montmartre (here) to finish off your Bastille Day in style.

Happy Bastille Day to everyone!
