Open House weekend 2022 in Paris, 17th & 18th September

This is event is something we’ve been looking forward to all summer – Open House weekend (the Journées du Patrimoine) is back for its 39th edition(!) with the theme of ‘sustainable heritage’, and a vast line-up of special openings and events.

So let’s take a look at some of what’s on offer on the Left Bank near our hotels!

Once a year, the Journées du Patrimoine allow you entry to places that are usually closed to the public, often with special events on offer too. It’s something you should really make the most of! And near our hotels there’s an almost overwhelming number of interesting events and venues on offer.

Near the Hotel les Dames du Panthéon and Hotel des Grands Hommes, entrance to the Pantheon will be free all weekend, as will the panorama visit to the dome (reservation obligatory though).

There are also a couple of short concerts from the musicians of the army and air force on Sunday at 2.30pm and 3.30pm, and a special installation in the crypt – Mireuses – putting the spotlight on the six great women whose remains are at Panthéon.

Behind the monument at the Saint-Étienne-du-Mont church, there are guided visits of the incredible place on Saturday at 3.30pm and 5pm, the Henri-IV college which dates from 1804 will let you visit its historic rooms (Saturday, from 2-5.30pm), and you can visit the impressive Pavillon Bourbon and see a documentary (Saturday from 10.30am-4.30pm) called “La montagne Sainte-Geneviève, 700 ans de campus universitaire“.

Near the Hotel Design Sorbonne, the Sorbonne University opens its doors to you on Saturday for free visits (spoiler alert – it’s amazing), and the next day there’s a concert from the Paris universities orchestra and choir at 4pm.

There’s also an event spotlighting Marie Curie on place de la Sorbonne on Sunday, guided visits of the History of Medicine Museum on Saturday morning, a ‘discovery visit’ (Saturday, 2pm) of the paintings in the chapel of Saint-Séverin church (the oldest on the Left Bank), which were recently restored…

On offer near the Hotel Saint-André des Arts are visits of the gorgeous Saint-Germain-des-Prés church (Saturday morning), free entrance to the Delacroix Museum, loads of events at the Monnaie de Paris, visits of the Institut de France and epic Mazarine library

If you’re staying at the Hotel Baume you’re not far from the Maison d’Auguste Comte which is open for free visits, with a concert and two exhibitions on offer. There are also guided visits of the Odéon Theatre, exhibitions, readings, a round table and poetry at Chez Mona, une cité audacieuse, visits of the Senate building (jaw-dropping) and the Jardin du Luxembourg, visits of the l’École des Mines, visits of the Zadkine Museum

And close to the Hotel & Spa la Belle Juliette you can visit the neo-byzantine chapel of the ‘sœurs auxiliatrices’ and enjoy a concert there Sunday afternoon. For something a little out of the ordinary, the Omega watch store is having a special day explaining the 65-year history and heritage of the brand, you can wander round the Laënnec Hospital (now HQ of Kering and Balenciaga, the Hotel de Matignon (not actually a hotel, but the home of France’s prime minister) is open and close by…

And that’s just a tiny selection of the hundreds of places and events on offer for this richly cultural weekend!
