Reshaped Reality – 50 Years of Hyperrealistic Sculpture exhibition at the Maillol Museum until 5th March 2023

The Maillol Museum, close to our hotels, has a new and disconcerting exhibition on offer – Reshaped Reality – which arrives in Paris after having been shown in a dozen cities around the world, but in a new version including some formerly unseen works.

Get ready to look puzzled by the works presented in the exhibition Hyperréalisme (Reshaped Reality). The immobile people you’ll see look real, but of course they are not. A woman clasps her child to her breast, a couple hugs (forever), a man is falling but never landing…

AuAs real as they seem, these people are sculptures (often in wax) designed to cheat our senses and make us think about what really makes living, lifelike things real.

With over forty sculptures on show, the exhibition is a sort of retrospective of fifty years of hyperrealism, and also explains how these creations are brought (if you’ll excuse the pun) to life.

A question also hangs over the exhibition: when art imitates reality so faithfully, is it still art?
