Algeria exhibition by Michael von Graffenried and Youcef Krache at the Galerie Esther Woerdehoff, 5th June – 27th July 2019

The latest exhibition from our friends at the galerie Esther Woerdehoff (super close to our hotels) show two different ways of seeing Algeria – the vintage shots by Michael von Graffenried and thos of young contemporary photographer Youcef Krache, who was born in Algiers in 1987 and still works there.

Between 1991 and 2002, Michael von Graffenried stayed in Algeria over thirty times, using a camera that allowed him to surreptitiously take shots in the street. He is one of the rare western photographers to have been able to document the terrorism and daily life of Algerians in that era.

Youcef Krache is a member of the 200 collective which offer a new look at Algerian society. Also working in black and white, his images show the everyday life of the Algerian population, and he is currently focused on the movement against Bouteflika’s re-election.

Thirty years separate the two photographes. You’ll be able to see up close the differences in their approach (most noticeably in the format of the images).
