Stephen Shames Bronx Boys exhibition at the Esther Woerdehoff Gallery, 29th January – 7th March 2020

For their first exhibition of the year, our friends at the Esther Woerdehoff Gallery are showing 1970s shots by American photographer Stephen Shames, born in 1947.

The young men that Shames chooses as the subject of this series, in a classic documentary style (no pathos or staging), have been abandoned by society, often poor and touched by violence.

Shames becomes their spokesperson, and was also very vocal about the Black Panther Party, publishing books of photos with strongly-worded texts explaining that poverty was at the root of a huge number of social problems and criminal activity.

There’s a raw force in these photos, a dramatic density that is best experienced by seeing them close up.
