Marc Riboud exhibition at the Guimet Museum, 19th May – 6th September 2021

UPDATE – new dates!

Before his death in 2016, le photographer Marc Riboud bequeathed all his work to Paris’ wonderful Guimet Museum.

Thanks to his generosity, the museum can now present this new exhibition, the first ever retrospective of his work, with numerous shots that have become undisputedly iconic.

Marc Riboud was born near Lyon in 1923, and once he became a photographer (and member of the Magnum agency) he stood out through his optimistic, humanist approach, convinced that man was capable of spreading light across the world (whether he would still think so now is another matter).

Following numerous voyages in Asia, he returned with images of societies that were largely unknown in Europe at that point. He was also very active in France, producing some photos that you are sure to recognise.

The exhibition – the opening date of which has been put back twice already – shows how Riboud traversed the tumultuous events of the 20th century and immortalised scenes from Calcutta, China (unknown to the West at the time), Africa, Algeria, Cambodia and of course France.

If you’d like to contemplate Marc Riboud’s photos from the comfort of your own home, a catalogue of the exhibition has just been published (272 pages, 35€ here at amazon.fr).

And if you’d like to see even more of his work, you’re in luck! Paris’ Polka Galerie is currently presenting an exhibition of Riboud’s photos called Chines (literally ‘Chinas’) that you can see in 3D virtual reality – very well done – below.
