RIP Thierry Mugler 😥 Thierry Mugler, Couturissime exhibition at the MAD Paris until 24th April 2022

Conceived and produced by the Musée des beaux-arts de Montréal, the large-scale exhibition Thierry Mugler, Couturissime has just opened at the MAD Paris (Musée des Arts Décoratifs) allowing you to discover the unbridled creativity of this fashion designer, perfume creator and (perhaps predictably) wild character…

Manfred Thierry Mugler may be best known for his fashion work in the 1980s and 1990s, but his name is still regularly cited as a reference, and his story starts way before then (and as you will learn, is continuing now).

Although his clothes line may have been shuttered in 2003 by the company to whom he sold his name, Mugler perfumes have been an incredible success, and the time seems perfect for an exhibition like this one to tell us more about the man’s unusually rich life.

Mugler was born in Strasbourg in 1948. At age 14 we joined the Rhin Ballet and toured with them for six years as a classical professional dancer. In 1967 he moved to Paris and made his first forays into fashion, drawing sketches for clothes brands and eventually creating his own clothes for the capital’s first concept store, Gudule.

In 1973, at the of 25, Mugler released his first ever collection under the name Café de Paris, and founded the company Thierry Mugler. Five years later he was opening the first store with his name above the door, and taking the photos for the publicity campaign that accompanied it.

The eighties were dawning, and Mugler’s success was about to skyrocket.

The exhibition looks back at the major moments in the designer’s career and his multiple metamorphoses. His collections breathed new life into the French fashion scene, but Mugler was also busy directing films, music videos and cabaret shows, creating perfumes, photographing his collections, designing costumes for a play at the venerable Comédie-Française…

Each section of the exhibition is presented like an act of an opera, creating atmospheres that reflect Mugler’s different projects.

Spread over two huge levels, the presentation showcases many of Mugler’s most iconic creations in prêt-à-porter and haute couture, together with previously unseen archive photos and videos, and digital presentations of much more.

If you’d like to delve into the subject even further, guided 90-minute visits are available, there are workshops for kids of various ages, and a catalogue of the exhibition has just been published (235 pages, 185 illustrations, 45€ here at amazon.fr).
