CinéMode par Jean Paul Gaultier exhibition at the Cinémathèque française, 6th October 2021 – 16th January 2022

Mixing fashion and film, here’s a new exhibition about national treasure Jean Paul Gaultier’s love of cinema, and his work for the cinema. A real treat!

Jean Paul Gaultier (69 years old now) has retired from the world of haute couture, but he’s still a very busy bee with, it seems, endless creativity.

This new exhibition at the Cinémathèque française helmed by the former fashion designer shows how movies influenced his work, with exhibits including dresses worn by Brigitte Bardot and Marilyn Monroe, Superman’s spandex suit and the shiny shiny shorts famously sported by Rocky.

JPG often gave his collections names with cinematic links (like James Blond) and has worked his fashions into several high-profile films (Kika, The Fifth Elements…). The exhibition will give lots of details about how film inspired fashion and vice versa.

The first part of the exhibition takes a look at a French film from 1945 called Falbalas, which is all about a fashion designer and the world of fashion. Seeing the film was a pivotal moment for Gaultier, and it has now been restored in 4K for re-release in cinemas and on Blu-ray / DVD on 20th October 2021 (19.99€ here at amazon.fr but already on sale at the Cinémathèque).

Gaultier will even sign your copy for you if you like! He’ll be present for a showing of the film on 17th October 2021, and a conference afterwards, before starting his signing session.

Later the same day (at 7pm), he’ll present The Fifth Element, and will be back the following Sunday, 24th October, to introduce Kika by Pedro Almodóvar, plus a showing of Rocky Horror Picture Show with performances by Burden of Quirk (who are specialist Rocky Horror actors!)

The second part of the exhibition looks at masculinity and femininity in film, the sexualisation of actors, their virility, their eroticism, and the fashion they wear in films – Catherine Deneuve in Yves Saint Laurent, Marlon Brando in a white vest, Grace Jones in Azzedine Alaïa…

Next, the subject turns to transgression in cinema – the androgyny of Marlene Dietrich and Katharine Hepburn, the subversive homoeroticism of Fassbinder’s Querelle, the exuberant sexuality of Rocky Horror Picture Show

Then, a room is dedicated to what seems a slightly odd subject – metal in cinema costumes, used for both knights in shining armour and the futuristic spacesuits of characters like Barbarella.

And to finish off, the exhibition looks at how fashion shows are depicted in films, and how real life fashion shows are now orchestrated like scenes from movies…

A whole cycle of films has been organised to accompany the exhibition – more details can be found here – and workshops are available for kids of all ages.

And if you’d like to keep a piece of the exhibition with you forever, and learn more about the subject in the comfort of your own home, a catalogue of the exhibition has just been published (240 pages, 40€ here at amazon.fr).
