Scribbles – from Leonardo da Vinci to Cy Twombly exhibition at the Beaux-Arts, 8th February – 30th April 2023

The Villa Médicis in Rome, Paris Beaux-Arts school and the Pompidou Centre offer a new exhibition with over 150 examples of ‘scribbles’ from the Renaissance to the modern day, with works from Leonardo da Vinci, Raphaël, Jean Dubuffet, Delacroix, Rembrandt, Cy Twombly, Basquiat…

It was during the Renaissance, with its strict codes for painting, that artists first started to turn towards a freer type of expression, inspired by kids’ drawings, in order to explore their artistic thoughts and ideas.

To this day, exploring one’s instincts and allowing any idea to be expressed in its rawest form allows artists a way to surprise and guide themselves – scribblings have become a form of art, an inspiration created by oneself.

In its eight sections, this new exhibition explores and juxtaposes old and new works (ancient graffiti from the Coliseum in Rome, Delacroix’s sketchbooks, photos by Brassaï, drawings by Cy Twombly…) showing the continued importance of this kind of graphic research.

Interestingly, the Beaux-Arts has a ‘responsible ticket office’ policy, allowing visitors to set the price of the admission themselves (you can choose between 5€, 10€ or 15€), and your ticket also gives you admission to a second exhibition (The professors scribble too… at the Cabinet des dessins et arts graphiques with pieces by lecturers from the school) and free guided visits on Thursday 8th February or 23 February during late-night opening.

A large catalogue of the exhibition is also available with 300 works presented over 400 pages – you’ll find it for around 39€ here at your local amazon.
