A new Matisse exhibition at the Orangerie, 1st March – 29th May 2023

With Matisse – Cahiers d’art, the pivotal 1930’s, the Orangerie (less than 30 minutes away on foot from the Hotel Saint-André des Arts) looks very specifically at a decade in the life of the artist during which he temporarily stopped painting and travelled to Tahiti, a voyage that would mark a change in his creative style…

Showing a side of Matisse that is not often tackled, Matisse – Cahiers d’art, the pivotal 1930’s looks at the artists through the prism of ‘Cahiers d’Art’, an avant-garde magazine created by Christian Zervos in 1926.

The magazine closely followed Matisse’s career during the 1930s, regularly presenting his work together with other artists such as Picasso, Miro, Braque, Kandinsky, Duchamp, Mondrian and Le Corbusier.

Thanks to to some exceptional loans (in particular by the Philadelphia Museum of Art), the exhibition includes many works rarely seen in France, like Le chant and Le Grand nu couché. There is also a selection of sculptures, engravings and drawings, as well as photos and films of the artist, and of course some copies of Cahiers d’art.

Around the exhibition, a study day is being organised on 23rd May, and family (details here).

A bilingual catalogue of the exhibition (256 pages, 188 illustrations) is also available for around 49€ here at your local amazon.
