If you’re nostalgic for times past and the 80s exhibition at the MAD has left you wanting more, it’s time to head to the Palais Galliera which is taking a long look at a decisive moment in fashion at the end of the 1990s – more precisely, what they’re calling 1997 – Fashion Big Bang!

So what happened in 1997? Why was that year so important for contemporary fashion?

Paris’ fashion museum, the Palais Galliera, uses this new exhibition to look at the key moments of 1997 that made it the veritable starting point for 21st century fashion, with three events concentrated on in particular :

— the revolutionary runways shows from Comme des Garçons, Raf Simons and Maison Margiela,

— the first steps of Jean Paul Gaultier and Thierry Mugler into the world of haute couture, and

— the arrival of fashion stars as artistic directors of venerable French fashion houses (John Galliano at Dior, Alexander McQueen at Givenchy….)

As the exhibition shows, 1997 was the year that helped Paris take back its spot as the hub for international fashion. This is illustrated with over 50 garments, plus previously unseen videos and archive documents.
