New Frontier III exhibition at the Louvre
until 28th April 2014

A mini-exhibition at the Louvre, the third in their annual exploration of the history of American painting, with five portraits of George Washington and people linked with him, painted just a few years after he was named President of the United States.

Here’s all the info.

Captain Hay of Spot – Henry Raeburn – Musée du Louvre

The Louvre is lucky enough to have some great paintings lent to it for the exhibition, such as the portrait of Washington by Charles Wilson Peale (1741-1827) depicting him as Commander in Chief of the Continental Army, on special loan from the Musée du Château de Versailles, and another by Gilbert Stuart (1755-1828) – one of the most talented American portrait artists – lent by the Crystal Bridges Museum.

Also, the portrait of Captain Robert Hay of Spot by the Scotsman Raeburn (1756-1823) has been freshly and specially restored.
