Exhibition 21 rue La Boétie –
Picasso, Matisse, Braque, Léger…

at the Musée Maillol, 2nd March – 23rd July 2017

Inspired by the life of Paul Rosenberg, one of the most important art dealers of the early 20th century (as told in the eponymous book by Anne Sinclair, his granddaughter), the exhibition 21 rue La Boétie brings together around masterpieces of modern art.

A beautiful selection and an astonishing story, in a museum very close to our hotels! Here’s all the info.

Paul Rosenberg was not only an influential art dealer, with galleries in New York and Paris (the famous 21 rue La Boétie), but also friends with some of the biggest artists of his era.

Through a selection of paintings with strong links to Rosenberg, the exhibition tells of the founding of his gallery, explains how he encouraged modernism, details his growing importance in the art world, talks of his forced exile during the war (during which the Germans requisitioned his gallery) and explains how dozens of pieces from Rosenberg’s collection were intercepted (by a military unit including his son) on a German train just north of  Paris.

Paul Rosenberg bought it from the painter in 1937, but it was stolen by the nazis four years laters and destined for Göring’s private collection. After the war, Norwegian shipowner Niels Onstad bought if from Parisian dealer Henri Bénézit for an arts centre in the suburbs of Oslo. The painting was only returned to the Rosenberg family in 2012.
