"Rembrandt and the New Jerusalem: Jews and Christians in the Golden Age of Amsterdam" exhibition at The Musée d’art et d’histoire du Judaïsme till 1 July 2007

This magnificent exhibition, part of a number of events to mark Rembrandt’s four-hundredth birth anniversary, is being held in one of the loveliest town houses in Paris in the historic Marais quarter…

The Musée d’art et d’histoire du Judaïsme is hosting “Rembrandt et la Nouvelle Jérusalem, Juifs et Chrétiens à Amsterdam au Siècle d’or”, an exhibition with over 190 works (paintings, sketches, prints, objets d’art, manuscripts and rare documents) including five Rembrandt paintings that are being shown for the first time in France.
The theme is an unusual cultural and religious event: the settling of Jews fleeing the Iberian Peninsula and Central Europe in Amsterdam, where religious tolerance reigned, in the 17th century. The Netherlands welcomed this community of “new Christians” who had been forced to convert to Christianity in Portugal but, having remained secretly faithful to Judaism, now became the “new Jews” of Amsterdam.
Hundreds of works by Rembrandt (portraits and historical scenes) confirm that he witnessed the exchanges and discussions between the Jewish and Protestant communities of the time.
The exhibition at the MAHJ takes us on a fascinating voyage into this historical period, placing it in the context of Rembrandt’s lifetime (1606-1669), from the settlement of the Jews in the Netherlands to the inauguration of Amsterdam’s Great Synagogue.
