Rodin and Photography exhibition in Paris

Beautiful photos of beautiful sculptures…

Auguste Rodin was born a year after photography had been invented, and between 1870 and 1917 he amassed 7,000 photos! Around the end of the 19th Century, when he was becoming successful, he hired two ‘official’ photographers, Eugène Druet and Jacques-Ernest Bulloz to make sure that his work was presented in the best possible light. Even back then, it seems that artists were careful about promoting themselves…

What Rodin didn’t predict perhaps, is that the beauty of his sculptures would provoke a certain ‘ambiance’ in the these photos. They often have a dream-like feeling to them, and it’s interesting to see how they stand up as works of art themselves.

The Museé Rodin will be showing 200 of these photos, giving a fascinating insight into Rodin’s creative process and a new view of his work.
