Jean-Louis Forain “la comédie parisienne” exhibition at the Petit Palais from 10th March 2011 – 5th June 2011

Modern in style and an observer of society, Jean-Louis Forain (1852-1931) drew scenes of Parisian life with his own particular style, and a preference for the city’s slightly less respectable sides…

Nowadays, we’re assaulted non-stop by images, but back in the 19th century you had to be a painter to immortalise scenes from everyday life. Forain continuously searched out the truth in his scenes, going to smart evening engagements, horse races, the opera and other chic engagements, as well as seedy bars and house of disrepute, all in order to show that beneath the wealthy, genteel veneer of Parisian life, there was often disdain, inequality and vice.

AFter starting off with simple observation, his painting took a notably moralistic turn, deliberately showing the injustices of the time. He lived through the First World War, experience the verve of the 1930s, both subjects that lent themselves perfectly to his style.

IN the exhibition you’ll find 240 pieces mostly taken from public and private collections in France, America and Europe. After Paris, it will be shown at the Dixon Gallery & Gardens in Memphis. The exhibition Jean-Louis Forain “la comédie parisienne” is at the Petit Palais (here) from 10th March 2011 – 5th June 2011.
