The Arc de Triomphe wrapped by the Christo and Jeanne-Claude team, 18th September – 3rd October 2021

Christo Vladimiroff Javacheff died just over a year ago, but the (slightly crazy) project devised by him and his wife to wrap the Arc de Triomphe is being completed as planned. If fact, preparations started during the summer and are practically finished…

You’ll only have sixteen days to see the giant work of art – from this Saturday 18th September to Sunday 3rd October 2021, and tThere’s a special page on the artists’ website that give the full timeline of the project.

While reading it, we learnt that Christo had had the project in mind since the early 1960s, and was still trying to make it happen during the 1980s. Only in 2018 did things really start moving, when the project was presented to the French President Emmanuel Macron.

Called The Arc de Triomphe, wrapped, 25,000m² of fabric have been used for the project (blueish silver polypropylene, recyclable) and 3,000 metres of red rope made of the same material.

But how much is all this costing, you might ask? The surprising answer is actually zero euros – no public or private funds have been necessary to make the project come to fruition. All expenses are being covered by the sale of original works by Christo.

Also, the monument will remain open as usual during both the set-up and the duration of the installation.

We can hardly wait! In the meantime, you can read all about the project’s history here and find all the answers to your practical questions here.

Oh, and you might like to see the spectacular photos we took during our visit to the Arc de Triomphe not so long ago here!

Also, until 3rd October, a free outdoor exhibition is available on the banks of the Seine near Pont Neuf (on the Right Bank), with 24 photos of Christo’s past projects. Interesting context for this incredible project!
