True to nature – Open-air Painting 1780-1870 exhibition at the Custodia Foundation until 3rd April2022

After a stint at Washington’s National Gallery of Art, this exhibition at the Custodia Foundation, near our hotels, show the beauty of outdoor painting in Europe from 1780-1870, with over 150 gorgeous exhibits!

All rights reserved

It’s cold, it’s grey, but we have the answer to the grizzliest of winters – 150 paintings showing the natural splendours of Europe in the early 19th century!

Some of the artists on display will not be familiar to you (Johann Martin von Rohden? Achille-Etna Michallon?), others should be (John Constable, Rosa Bonheur), but it’s the subject itself that will bring warmth to your frozen heart – the beauty of nature, an inexhaustible source of inspiration for these painters and a way to show foreign climes to populations who were much less used to travelling than we are today.

The subject matter is often simply the countryside, but you’ll also see rustic houses, farms, ruins, a castle or two and a cornucopia of erupting volcanoes! 🌋
