In 1919, at the age of 22, André Breton stayed at the Hotel des Grands Hommes with Philippe Soupault (true story), and together they invented automatic writing.

A little over a hundred years later, the Giacometti Institute near our hotels (that we visited for you a few years ago) has a new exhibition exploring the links between Breton the famous theoretician of surrealism and Giacometti the artist, two atypical creative spirits, illustrated with pieces by Picasso, Salvador Dalí, Joan Miró, Max Ernst…

In collaboration with the Association Atelier André Breton and the Pompidou Centre, this new exhibition shows for the first time the intellectual, artistic and amical links between two major figures of the 20th century art world – Alberto Giacometti and André Breton.

The bringing together of these two men is not as odd as it may first seem – Giacometti spent five years as a member of the surrealist group in the 1930s, and it was during this time that he became great friends with Breton and other artists and intellectuals in the movement.

In the exhibition you’ll see how the two men inspired each other (you can certainly see the surrealism in Giacometti’s sculptures) to continuously strive for new, freer ways of creating art.

And the Institute itself is a beautiful venue that is worth taking a look at…
