Opening a week later than expected because of supply chain problems with the exhibition space, an eco-friendly pavilion specially made for the event out of Amazonian bamboo, the Aqua Mater exhibition by Franco-Brazilian photographer Sebastião Salgado opens its door on the concourse of La Défense, hoping to raise awareness fo the importance and beauty of water around the world.

The Sebastião Salgado Aqua Mater exhibition has been devised not only to present his gorgeous black and white photos, but as a complete sensorial experience.

The exhibition space is a 1,000m² bamboo pavilion conceived by Colombian architect Simón Vélez exclusively for the event, and your visit will be accompanied by original music by venerable (87 year-old) French composer François-Bernard Mâche , mist effects and ‘thousands’ of candles (according to the organisers)!

For decades, Salgado has been circumnavigating the globe taking photos of nature, and the exhibition (as you may have gathered) concentrates on water in the natural landscape. Organised in collaboration with UNESCO, you’ll need about an hour to see everything.

As for the admission price, they’ve made it rather complicated. Adults pay 16€, but there are (barely) reduced rates for pensioners (15€ if you are 65 years old or older), students / the unemployed (14€) and kids from 6-18 years old (11€). If you are lucky enough to be younger than 6, you get in free.

There’s also a family ticket for two adults and two children at the frankly bizarre price of 46.52€ 😟, an ‘Open VIP’ ticket that allows you to visit as many times as you like, whenever you want (25€) and a rate for groups of fifteen people or more (costing a minimum of 180€, which is around 12€ per person). Wow!
