Naked Burger – a fast food restaurant that’s good for the planet and your health

Paris welcomes visitors from all over the world, all year round, and many of them have special dietary requirements, but our beautiful city has been a little slow to cater for vegetarians, vegans and the gluten intolerant. Luckily, this is finally starting to change, as the founding of Naked Vegan Burger shows.

Opened late last year near our hotels (just 30 seconds from the Hotel Saint-André des Arts), it’s amusing to note that the 100% vegan restaurant has replaced a kebab shop, and you may be surprised to learn that the burgers are just as good if not better than the big name chains!

Naked Burger is definitely not your average burger joint. First of all, they have the word ‘naked’ in their name, perhaps just to be edgy and cool (because when we went, the staff were completely clothed). Secondly, the restaurant’s interior design looks like an acid trip in a 70s rollerdisco (their website agrees).

Don’t be dissuaded by the tiny ground floor space, entirely given over to the kitchen – their upstairs room is packed full of bright colours, neon signs and fake plants. It’s certainly out of the ordinary.

And inevitably, it won’t be to everyone’s taste. For those not on a retro trip (or acid) we suggest you order to take out, and enjoy your food on place Furstenberg or the banks of the Seine, both of which are mere minutes away.

The restaurant has a short list of six burgers (plus a small version of the ‘Naked Burger’ with less ‘meat’ and a lower price), featuring Beyond Meat burgers that even a carnivore would have distinguishing from actual beef, chicken and fish.

And the prices are not overly high, starting at 5.90€ for a Baby Naked and going up to 12.90€ for the biggest of the burgers. Adding a drink or french fried (the classic version, or sweet potato friess for 1€ extra) will cost just 2€ more for each. Nuggets are also on offer for a little more money.

We chose to partake of a Baby Naked and a Filet No’Fish, both with a drink and fries. Don’t expect radically luxurious presentation – your burger will arrive wrapped in paper, on a plastic tray, in the grand tradition of fast food joints.

The packaging says ‘vegan & tasty’, and it’s true that the photos on the website make them look rather delish…

But if there’s one comment we could make, it’s that that the burgers we received were not as plump and perfect as the photos. The bread was kinds bashed and the ensemble was a lot flatter than we had expected.

It wasn’t all bad new though – the burgers were really, really good, especially the Filet No’Fish – we have such bad memories of the fish burger from a certain restaurant chain called Mc something-or-other which was always slimy and lukewarm. This one had a real consistency to it, and taste!

Also, as far as value-for-money goes, the burger costs less than a single tiny dish from the tasting menu at Shiro (last month’s restaurant review).

We think that a lot of people will find it hard believe there is no meat in their burger. Also, let’s talk french fries, specifically about how great they were dipped in vegan mayonnaise or ketchup. 😋

Perhaps when we return (because yes, we are going back) we’ll try the nuggets, and perhaps even a dessert, chosen from the short and rather standard choices on offer.

The restaurant says that their burgers contain fewer calories than actual meat burgers, and it’s now well-known that eating vegetarian or vegan is better for the environment, but after our good meal (and good deed) we decided to go buy dessert next door from Merveilleux de Fréd.

These meringue-like mountains aren’t easy to eat without getting them all over your face, but we made an extra-special effort and got there in the end!

And with that, our LSD flashback ‘n’ picnic was over, and very nice it was too!

No animals are harmed when you eat at Naked Burger, and their food is tasty and reasonably-priced. Plus, they’re in the centre of town and open all day, seven days a week. Even the more sceptical customer is sure to be surprised. Try them and see! 😋
