The Vuitton Foundation, housed in a spectacular Frank Gehry building in the Bois de Boulogne, has a new exhibition on offer, examining the collaborative work of two artistic geniuses – Andy Warhol and Jean-Michel Basquiat, with 80 of their paintings on show in nine galleries, the biggest presentation of their joint works ever organised.

This is quite an extraordinary exhibition, a coup for Paris, and essential if you like contemporary art – Basquiat × Warhol. Painting Four Hands explores the work produced by two icons of the art world who admired and respected each other so much that they decided to create together.

After starting with the portraits each painted of the other, the exhibition goes on to showcase the energy and strength of their rapport through the collaborative paintings upon which they worked almost daily. The mutual inspiration is palpable.

Just over a dozen paintings on show also had a third contributor, Italian painter Francesco Clemente, and the exhibition also includes some works from Warhol and Basquiat’s New York peers, such as Jenny Holzer and Keith Haring.

In all, over three hundred works of art and documents are yours to scrutinise and enjoy.
