There are a handful of places that really make Saint-Germain-des-Prés something special, the three biggest of which would probably by the Café de Flore, the restaurant Brasserie Lipp and… Les Deux Magots, actually founded a few years before the Flore(!) and proud of it.

On place Saint-Germain-des-Prés, opposite the church, this literary café has always attracted artists, intellectuals and celebrities (or wannabe celebrities). This endless stream of writers, musicians, painters, philosophers, actors, sculptors, fashion designers and architects built the café’s longstanding reputation as the place to see and be seen, in its ornate rooms or vast terrace.

Basically, it’s a spot that should be on the bucket list of every visitor to Paris.

For the exhibition celebrating the café’s 140th anniversary, numerous carefully-selected photos are on display, showing the big names that have passed through the doors.

You’ll also be able to learn more about how the café has changed and developed over the years, and see two statuettes attached to a column in the main room, the famous ‘magots’ behind the place’s name.

And for even more details about the iconic café, a small book is available to buy on-site, giving more info on the café through the years, and a few choice stories of memorable events and famous customers.

If you want to follow in the steps of Rimbaud, Verlaine, Ernest Hemingway, James Joyce, André Breton, Jean-Paul Sartre, Juliette Gréco, Marlène Dietrich, Charlotte Rampling, Johnny Depp, Jack Nicholson, J.J Abrams, Giorgio Armani, Sonia Rykiel, Paul McCartney and John Lennon, you know where to go…

And this summer, keep your eye on 2 rue de Buci (here) for the café’s new concept, Les Deux Magots to take away! The legend continues – more details soon….

Les Deux Magots (here) is open seven days a week from 7.30-1am
