Widescreen Orient – A panoramic era in photography, an exhibition at the Roger-Viollet agency until 8th January 2022

This new (free!) exhibition near our hotels gives a different view of the Orient at the dawn of the 20th century – a panoramic view!

Venerable photo agency Roger-Viollet has a huge database of beautiful vintage photos, not just of Paris and France, but the whole world.

This new exhibition in their gallery-boutique showcases photos of Morocco, Tunisia, Algeria and Egypt around 1900, in an astonishing panoramic format that changes the scene completely.

The format is perfect for wide views of deserts, pyramids and towns…

We have the studios of Léon & Lévy to thanks for these wonderful shots. Back in the day, L&L sent their photographers all around the world to take photos that were developed on-site using plates of glass measuring 16 x 42cm – quite an exploit!

The result is a gorgeous, almost unreal collection of extraordinary views, around fifty of which have been selected to be shown to the public for the first time ever. Don’t miss it!
