Pioneers – Artists in the Paris of the Roaring Twenties exhibition at the Luxembourg Museum until 10th July 2022

A few days in advance of International Women’s Day, the Luxembourg Museum (very close to our hotels) has opened a fascinating new exhibition about the female artists of Paris in the roaring twenties, pioneers with names both known and less well-known, including Tamara de Lempicka, Tarsila do Amaral, Sonia Delaunay, Amrita Sher-Gil, Pan Yuliang

Born around the end of the 19th and beginning of the 20th centuries, the female artists of the roaring twenties played a key part in developing the major movements in modern art.

Many of these ‘new women’ stayed in Paris, whether for a few weeks or a number of years, and were the first to own galleries, studios and publishing houses. Recognised as artists, they also sometimes taught in art schools or dared to paint the naked human form (both male and female).

Their choice of clothing proudly highlighted their sexuality, helping them affirm their sovereignty over their bodies. They chose to marry, or not, showed their strength and opened the world of contemporary art to new forms of expression.

The exhibition highlights the work of 45 of these strong, determined and revolutionary women, the influence of whom resonates to this day. You’ll see paintings, films, sculpture, works made of fabric and even some puppets!

The presentation conference with the curators of the exhibitions is unfortunately sold out already, but French-speakers can learn more about the roaring twenties (the period that also inspired the interior design of the Hotel Baume) in this article on the museum’s website.

Another article examines the female-owned spaces on the Left Bank, rightly states that the latin quarter and Montparnasse were important artistic epicentres at the time, and explains that the years following First World War were partially responsible for rethinking the patriarchal model of society.

For further information on the subject, a catalogue for the exhibition is also available (208 pages, 160 images, 40€ here at amazon.fr).
