The Theatre of Emotions exhibition at the Marmottan Museum until 21st August 2022

The Marmottan Museum has a new exhibition on offer featuring nearly eighty exhibits, exploring how emotion has been expressed through painting from the 14th century right up to the modern day…

Art has always tried to elicit an emotion and stimulate curiosity, often by showing the emotions of others.

In this new exhibition, historian and philosopher Georges Vigarello and art historian Dominique Lobstein try to shed new lights on the representation of emotion in paintings from the Middle Ages to modern times.

Presented in eight themed sections, you’ll see how emotions have evolved over time, and that the reaction to emotion differs from one century to another. Objects that provoke emotion are not always the same, the intensity of reactions evolves and interpretations differ.
