Tarō Okamoto – Reinventing Japan exhibition at the Quai Branly Museum until 7th September 2025

Near our hotels, the Quai Branly Museum offers you the chance to discover an avant-garde Japanese artist that many people don’t know much about – Tarō Okamoto (1911-1996) – through his paintings, sculptures, photos and writings.

After living in France from 1930 to 1940, frequenting the surrealist and abstract artists of the time, Tarō Okamoto returned to Japan where he quickly became one of the country’s major avant-garde artists.

And yet, he remained mostly anonymous in Europe, and this new exhibition at the Quai Branly Museum is a great opportunity to discover his work, especially the period between 1930 and 1970. For example, you’ll learn all about his monumental piece Tower of the Sun, a 70-metre high building in Osaka constructed for the Universal Exposition of 1970.

The exhibition is being held in a part of the museum called the Atelier Martine Aublet, a section of the venue dedicated to artistic experimentation, which you’ll find in the central mezzanine of the museum’s permanent collection presentation.
