The Quai Branly Museum, close to our hotels, would like to tell you all about the main temple of the Mexica Empire (1325-1521), following research conducted under Mexico City in 1978.

In the exhibition Mexica – Offerings and Gods at the Templo Mayor, articles found during the digs are being shown in Europe for the very first time.

When the local electricity company was digging under Mexico City in February 1978, they didn’t expect to find remains of the ancient city of Tenochtitlan. It was an important discovery – archeological excavation continued for the following fifty years, revealing items that tell us much about the Mexica Empire’s art, son architecture and rituals.

Now, for the first time in Europe thanks to this new exhibition at the Quai Branly Museum, you can see a selection of the objects found buried, including more than two hundred offerings to the gods, showing artistic excellence and a dynamic society that had never been suspected before…

Around the exhibition there are:

— two special weekends to help you get to know contemporary nahuatl culture – Expressions contemporaines du Mexique – 8th/9th June and 15th/16th June in the museum and its gardens, with performances, music, contemporary dance…

— a showing of the film La piedra ausente on 16th April, followed by a Q&A with athroppologist and historian Paula López Caballero,

— a selection of five other Mexican films between 23rd and 26th May,

… plus numerous different guided visits, and workshops for kids.
