Large Restored Works from Notre-Dame exhibition at the Galerie des Gobelins, 24th April – 21st July 2024

Notre-Dame reopens before the end of the year (read our article about it here) and the work that’s been done on both the building and its contents is truly impressive.

This new exhibition near our hotels, organised by DRAC Île-de-France and Mobilier national, presents masterpieces saved from the fire and now restored, notably twenty-one large format paintings, a wall hanging of the life of Virgin Mary, the huge tapis de Savonnerie carpet gifted to the cathedral by King Charles X and other remarkable objects.

While the fire at Notre-Dame did not destroy everything, many objects inside the building were damaged by smoke or water and had to be evacuated. Using interactive touchscreens, this new exhibition will explain how the cathedral’s contents were restored – a different process for each type of object – the techinuqes that were used and the importance of science in the meticulous process.

For example, thirteen Mays (sacred paintings from the 17th century) presetn inside the cathedral the night of the fire have now been restored and will be shown in the exhibition together with right other large paintings.

The chancel carpet measuring nearly 200m² is also on display before being put back in place in the cathedral for its reopening.

These articles from the 17th-19th century are accompanied by a selection of contemporary pieces, including those by artist Guillaume Bardet (who has designed the baptistry, altar, cathedra, ambon and tabernacle), as well as the new chair designed by Ionna Vautrin, 1,500 of which will be produced by the family-owned company Bosc in the Landes region of southwest France.
