Mi-Hyun Kim photo exhibition at the
Philippe Chaume Gallery, 5th June 18th July 2009

Korean photogramher Mi-Hyun Kim, borni in 1962 in Seoul, shows us the Hungshan mountain range – litterally “yellow mountains” – classed as a Unesco World Heritage Site since 1990.

For several centuries, the site has built its reputation on four natural phenomena, called the Four Marvels: shady hundred year-old pine trees, hot water springs, strangely-shaped rock formations and a sea of clouds. It’s an exceptional site, whose geology and climate – subtropical mountainous monsoons – make it unique.

Mi-Hyun Kim’s photos pay a double homage to Chinese cultural history. One one hand, they use the classic pictural theme of landscape, on the other they continue the Tao tradition of emptiness and fullness, the fullness of the mountains which is reinforced by the emptiness of the clouds.

Mi-Hyun Kim photographs not only nature but Man in nature, because of their interaction in the world. The tourists in their multicoloured raincoats, descending the mountain or blithely eating their packed lunch in front of this incredible panorama give body to the mist. In the same way, the conifers are linked to the mountain by a sea of clouds.

The photo exhibition by Mi-Hyun Kim is at the Philippe Chaume Gallery, 9 rue de Marseille, 75010 Paris (map here) from 5th June – 18th July 2009. Inauguration with drinks on Thursday 4th June from 6-9pm.
