The Bouteille d’Or restaurant, Paris

Open since the late summer, or rather re-opened after being remodelled, la Bouteille d’Or close to our hotels looks brand new, with several different rooms to dine in and a large terrace with a great view of Notre-Dame.

We thouhg this might be your typical tourist trap, but that wasn’t true at all. What a great find – a restaurant with a super view, cheery staff, great food (all made on site) and reasonable prices!

The restaurant menu explains that the Bouteille d’Or has been in existence since 1631! The interior design is bang up to date, which a hip, slightly retro vibe. It’s not overdone, with plentiful use of wood, and there are several different rooms, allowing you to choose the atmosphere you prefer.

Of course, there’s al the large terracce that ovelooks Notre-Dame – guaranteed to make you go wow – even if some people will find the rather heavy traffic a little too much.

The Bouteille d’Or is proud to announce that all their dishes are 100% homemade (you’d be surprised how many places just reheat sachets). There’s also a special price if you have two or three courses, and it’s not very high for the area – 27€ or 34€ – with a large choice that should please everyone.

We started off with shellfish in a white wine sauce with smoked onions and parsley, and cod accras with spicy mayonnaise and lime.

The shellfish were two razor shells and lots of mussels, and the sauce was delicious, with a great taste of white wine and a hint of ginger.

The accras were huge, super crunchy, not at all greasy (a common fault) and the mayonnaise was a huge success.

For the first main dish we chose the wild squid prepared ‘snack-style’ with beafsteak tomatoes and aubergine cooked with garlic and horseradish, accompanied by fregola pasta matured parmesan.

The second dish was a vegetarian salad with lettuce hearts, smashed avocado with coriander, ricotta with fresh herbs, radishes and… strawberry!

The squid was perfectly cooked, and went well with the herb-laced sauce and bed of melty aubergine. The portion was surprisingly generous too.

As for the salad, it was pretty huge too, and also surprisingly rich with all the ricotta and avocado. We were completely full after eating it, and impressed at how well the strawberry went with the other ingredients!

Even if we weren’t hungry any more, we had to try at least one dessert for you (#sodedicated). This proved a little difficult to order, as the restaurant had filled up and our waitress was difficult to grab, but we managed eventually and ordered rice pudding with salted caramel sauce.

What a success! The rice was perfectly cooked, the sauce had just the right amount of creamy texture, and the sauce… Well, honestly, who can resist salted caramel, eh?

La Bouteille d’Or was a very pleasant surprise indeed. The staff is smiley and attentive (our waitress was super nice), all the dishes seem to be made with care, the prices are far from excessive and the view of Notre Dame is pretty magical.
