The prestigious and venerable Roger-Viollet photo agency opens a new exhibition in its presentation space near our hotels, showing women in the 20th century, their emancipation and the struggle to achieve it.

Astonishingly, it’s only at the beginning of the 20th century that girls (“the weaker sex”) started to receive the same education as boys in France, giving the possibility of aspiring to be something other than a wife or mother.

Over the decades (and two World Wars), women’s role in society changed, generally through struggles led… by women – suffragettes, female political activists, philosophers, women lawyers, artists, scientists…

While advances were made, it still took nearly 80 years for women to have the fundamental right over their own bodies, and the right to choose to give birth or not.

Nowadays, women still earn less than men for comparable work, women have lower pensions than men, women are still attacked by men…

The fight continues, as the exhibition shows, but there are also shots of women having fun, famous women from the century… Expect a mix of serious photos and lighter subjects.

All the 86 photos on show are available to buy in limited editions of 30 (although the website doesn’t give prices).

Another option would be to buy the 256-page that the photos are taken from, available for around 38€ at your local Amazon.
