Paris’ Fashion Museum has a new exhibition of the famous Italian photographer Paolo Roversi, with 50 years of iconic imagery on view – the first ever Parisian exhibition of his work.

Born in Italy but a Paris resident since 1973, Paolo Roversi created his own style of fashion photography over the years, using odd colours (thanks to innovative development techniques), blurring effetcs (from long exposures) and a hybrid of black & white and sepia tones that make his work unique.

You probably know his photos from the biggest fashion magazines, showcasing the most famous models wearing clothes from venerable fashion brands including Christian Dior, Cerruti 1881, Yohji Yamamoto, Romeo Gigli, Comme des Garçons, Acne Studios and more.

Oh, and he also did an official portrait of Kate Middleton in 2021 😳

The exhibition contains 140 of the photographer’s photos, some of which have never been seen before, showcasing his original approach to fashion photography through the use of Polaroids and their element of ‘controlled chance’. For example, Roversi isn’t scared to mix a colour negative with a black and white positive in order to achieve a new kind of image.

The exhibition is in six themed sections, with presentation designed by Ania Martchenko.

Linked with the exhibition there are free guided visits one Saturday per month and workshops for kids (Filters and photos, creation of a customised tote bag…), but the biggest event is probably a talk by the 76 year-old Roversi himself at the Italian Cultural Institute in Paris (here) on 3rd June at 7pm.
