Calder – Dreaming in Equilibrium exhibition at the Louis Vuitton Foundation until 16th August 2026

50 years after the death of the artist, the Louis Vuitton Foundation pays homage to Alexander Calder, with close to 300 mobile and ‘stabile’ works (to use Calder’s own description), from the smallest to the very largest…

With a chronological presentation spreading across more than 3,000 m² (every single gallery at the vast Foundation) the exhibition Calder. Rêver en équilibre (Calder – Dreaming in Equilibrium) is one of the biggest and most comprehensive presentations of his work ever organised, with not only his kinetic abstract pieces and large metal sculptures, but also works that you may be less familiar with, such as his paintings, sculpted wood figures, portraits made of wire and even some jewellery.

Calder’s work is also juxtaposed with that of other contemporary artists from his era, including Barbara Hepworth, Paul Klee, Piet Mondrian and Pablo Picasso.

A section of the exhibition also shows 35 photos of the artists taken by some of the most famous photographers of the 20th century: André Kertész, Henri Cartier-Bresson, Agnès Varda, Man Ray, Gordon Parks, Irving Penn…

All these exhibits will help you understand Calder’s fundamental artistic preoccupations: movement of course, but also the use of colour, light, different materials, sound…

With important loans from the Whitney Museum of American Art and the collaboration of the Calder Foundation, Calder – Dreaming in Equilibrium is perhaps the definitive exhibition about the artist, and an event that should not be missed.
